The FWIC's first president was Emily Murphy, a women's activist from Alberta.

The international organization for all WIs around the world is the Associated Countrywomen of the World. It was founded in 1933 as a result of the efforts of Margaret Watt, who had taken the WI concept from Canada to the UK during WWI. Mrs. Watt became the first president of the ACWW.
